The Forests features several hundred miles of routes suitable for 4-wheel-drive vehicles. Also recreation opportunities are offered at over 200 sites on the Forests. These opportunities vary from minimally developed sites -- such as picnic areas with vault toilets and hand water-pumps, small scenic overlooks, and small non-fee campgrounds -- to major highly developed recreation complexes having swimming beaches, camping spurs with utility hookups, warm showers, and flush toilets. Many of the developed recreation areas are opened Memorial Day through Labor Day. Check with the appropriate Forest Service office to obtain current information on the sites which interest you and the applicable rules.

Rausch Creek Off Road Park is devoted to providing a fun legal place for 4x4 off road clubs and organizations to go "wheeling." The park consists of 1,700 acres of easy, intermediate, and hard trails. Rocks, bowls, hills, the glacial "Rock Creek", club friendly trails, and free on site camping combine to make Rausch Creek a unique 4x4 destination. We are not open to quads or bikes. The beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore are attracting more visitors every year. One form of recreation that is increasing in popularity is beach driving. The speed limit is 25 mph on all beaches. Proceed with due caution and have consideration for other beach users. Seat belts are required for all front seat occupants and recommended for rear seat passengers. Beach pedestrians ALWAYS have the right-of-way. Drive slowly and detour around people lying, standing or walking on the beach. Watch for fishing lines. Avoid overloading your vehicle with people. Do not allow your passengers to sit on the tailgate or rooftop, or otherwise stand or hang outside your vehicle. No open containers of alcoholic beverages allowed in moving vehicles. No public consumption, display or possession of spirituous liquor or fortified wine is allowed in the park.

The off-highway vehicle trail system in the Uwharrie offers a variety of topography and scenery. All trails are designated for all off-highway vehicles, except for a small portion of the Dickey Bell Trail located west of SR 6584 which is suitable only for use by ATV’s or motorcycles. Stay on the trail system to help prevent soil erosion and creek sedimentation, which occur as a result of illegal trail use. FS roads can be used as trail connectors, but all vehicles operating on the road system must be "street legal" meaning that the vehicles are fully licensed, inspected and registered. Persons violating these regulations will be fined according to the law. Helmets are required on the OHV trail system . The trail system is subject to a seasonal closure during the winter months in order to prevent unacceptable soil erosion and stream sedimentation.

Crozet is definitely a highly challenge place to off road. Lifted rig, bigger tires and lockers are recommended. Knowing your driving capability and risk tolerance will help you to make it a 4x4 enjoyable day.
